Big news falling from the sky tonight! Have your wishes ready because tonight the earth and the moon both pass through the tail of Hailey’s comet, showering up to 50 meteors an hour at its peak just after midnight EST. Otherwise known as the Orionid meteor showers. So what’s the big deal exactly?
Well tonight’s celestial fireballs come to us courtesy of none other than Hailey’s Comet, the most infamous of all comets, shedding chunks of its icy exterior every year around this time, which to our earth-bound eyes, appear to fall from the constellation Orion. So again, what’s the big deal exactly?
Well besides making pretty streaks of light in our night sky, Hailey’s Comet has a long been suspected of harboring aliens aboard it. Of being essentially a celestial transit system for canny aliens who harness its power and radiation-resistant icy exterior to transport supplies and beings from planet to planet.
Ancient cultures around the world, from Greece to China thought of these comet riders as god-like beings from outer space, a belief that both flattered and scared the aliens aboard Hailey’s Comet.
“Hey I just work here,” stated one such alien in 1986, the last time Hailey’s Comet stopped by Earth. “But seriously if I were a God, don’t you think I could find a better ride than this giant ball of ice making a 75 year loop around the solar system? Think about it. I’m packed into this peanut shaped pile of rubble with all the rabble of the solar system who are too cheap to travel warp speed. Sheesh. We don’t even stop to let people off, we just launch them off toward the planet!”
So who or what will they bring this time? Watch and see. And don’t forget to report back. Or you can read one scientist’s opinion here http://sethonsurvival.com/?p=2072
