A crystal discovered in Russia by a Nobel Prize-winning scientist has been officially designated as ALIEN QUASICRYSTAL by a team of scientists this week.
These ordinary-looking alien crystals are actually so strange and upsetting that Nobel winning chemist Dan Shechtman was ordered to leave his own lab by angry colleagues.
“Eyn chaya kazo,” Daniel Shechtman famously said to himself in Hebrew while examining the crystals: “There can be no such creature!”
So what IS this alien crystal creature that has scientists so afraid? Well earth crystals are composed of a three-dimensional arrangement of atoms that repeat in an orderly pattern. But quasicrystals have an orderly pattern that includes pentagons (fivefold shapes) and unlike our earth crystals, the pattern NEVER repeats itself exactly!
This shifting crystal structure gives the rock strange powers that scientists like Paul Stenhardt are still trying to study. Meanwhile, what should survivors do if they encounter one of these alien crystals? Pick it up and take it home? It could be a source of untapped power, maybe help you with your housework or keep your brother out of your room, but but at what cost?
Clearly we need to know more. I am currently trying to reach scientists Paul Stenhardt and Daniel Shechtman to clarify appropriate safety protocol. We’ll see how that goes. Meanwhile if you think you have found an alien quasicrystal, maybe don’t get too close until we know more.
